www.redhat.com claims that since 4.2 there are no y2k related problems.
But I think there are many other problems, so in any case you should at
least apply all the recommended updates.

One (bad) way (if your disks are not scsi) is to
  cat /proc/ide/hd$/capacity
there $ is a, b etc.
