package management (debian and its derivatives use .deb, almost
everything else uses rpm or nothing, bsd has the ports dir and that
sys-whatever that i forget the name of)

installation (they have different install programs, which results in
different installation methods (hd, cd, bootable cd, ftp, nfs, etc..))
default installed stuff (some include wordperfect and staroffice, some
install 3 versions of emacs, they have different versions of the
kernel..)
