Maybe "the comment remains in effect"?

But I think switching concepts from an "extended line" to
"block" is a bit fuzzy. I would prefer something like:

        Take care when commenting out text which is part
        of a multi-line block; the comment will in effect
        comment out the remainder of the multi-line block,
        unless the backslash is removed in the commented
        out line as well.
 - or -
        Take care when commenting out text which is part
        of a multi-line block; the comment will in effect
        comment out the remainder of the multi-line block,
        unless the backslash is also removed from the line
        where the comment marker ('#') is introduced.
