Actually the hosting company I run is a Cloudflare optimized partner, so I can probably answer your questions.
If DDOS is a concern you PROBABLY want to be looking at at least the Business level plan, which is pretty inexpensive ($20/month for first domain, $5 for each after). That works pretty well for controlling DOS and is fairly tunable. We have a fair number of sites behind Cloudflare - what do you want to know?
