Thanks for the suggestion, will check it out. I recognize there's some loss of value in not being able to automate the re-application of changes to a later system, but simply versioning /etc *does* provide a lot of value, that any schmoe new sysadmin can definitely understand. It's easy to maintain all the other stuff with standard backup and versioning tools.
