Oh, and for anyone looking at the shell snippet I provided: I'm sorry
for leaving $box_prefctype in there and not providing hints to its
setting.  Replace with 'en_US.UTF-8' -- the variable is there because on
some OSes I used to have to use a different value.  Fortunately, the
locale naming has stabilised a lot over the years.

It's really scary when you look over your shell config files and realise
that some parts are older than some co-workers.  Not the PuTTY
supporting parts.
