My second grade and fifth grade kids use Linux on a desktop in
the living room, and are happy about that. My fifth-grader has
an 11" netbook running Windows for in-school usage as a
disability accomodation, and he complains about that all the
time.

It's a desktop in the living room, with a largish screen,
because that way any parent walking by can see what's going on.
We find that this is the smoothest way of handling problematic
content.

It would certainly dispose of the malware issue handily. As long
as a chromebook has reliable wifi, it's a perfectly usable
machine. Without reliable wifi, it's more or less useless.
