We'd like to move to IP KVMs, where we can bring up the console remotely (working in computer rooms sucks as you all know...) Probably 16-port units, although 8-port may be acceptable in some cases. Be great to support more than one concurrent connection to each KVM. What does everyone like? (Or dislike? We had a Raritan IP KVM in our other computer room, the Java-based console was very flakey, to the point I stopped using it...)
I have been using Avocent in my current job. They seem to scale to dozens of switches accessable through one interface quite well and they can provide a virtual USB optical drive. I still prefer using the iDRAC console instead
Also, looking at Dell 1U rackmount console units (FPM185) - anyone use these, if so what's to know (if anything) good or bad about them? Also, if there are other 1U consoles we should check out, let me know.
I have used some. I don't hate them any more than other rackmount consoles. These days, having a monitor, keybord, and mouse on a roll around cart is my preferred solution. Overall, standing in the data center is the wrong way to do things.
