I signed up for gmail a long ass time ago. I don't know if they've changed any defaults since then, but the default calendar preferences on my account were: Yes, show events I've declined. Yes, automatically add invitations to my calendar.
This resulted in the ability to receive spam on my android phone. Not just spam, but *really* intrusive spam. Calendar alert gets my attention, buzzes in my pocket, gets me to pick up my phone and specifically look at it and acknowledge (dismiss) it. Today, I logged in and changed my preference. Hopefully problem goes away. If you haven't already, I recommend you do the same.
