We found a product call Up.Time (http://www.uptimesoftware.com/) that works well for us. We like it because:

1. It ties into VCenter and immediately starts basic monitoring of new VMs,

2. For windows machines it uses WMI so no agent needed

3. The agent is small for non-windows machines

4. Has a portal to Scrutinizer for NetFlow (they resell Scrutinizer)

5. SNMP for switches

6. Inexpensive compared to options like Zenoss

7. Lots of pre-made checks for applications.

We currently have Uptime in the data center I help support. I'm not the expert on it, but it's not really being used because we have exceeded licenses we have and getting enough licenses to cover what we have and are expecting will cost $$$. By my calculations it would be cheaper to hire someone full time to implement and support Nagios.

Right now I'm investigating Foglight to see if it will be adequate for what we need. Politically, Foglight has advantages in my environment, but I don't know much about it. Comments would be most welcome.

It's not what I know that counts.
It's what I can remember in time to use.
