I would not touch the /etc/redhat-release file. That can cause side effects.

The tools (EDA - like Cadence IC or HFSS,  or otherwise) I've dealt with had a 
startup script that examined the /etc/redhat-release file. I simply looked at 
the case statement they had and added the appropriate case for a CentOS value. 
Respectfully, I've used hammers before - this is not a hammer.
