Some years ago I read some doco from VMWare about optimising performance 
and it recommended noop for their virtual boxes.  I've extrapolated this 
to any kind of virtual box.

If you think about it this makes perfect sense.  Since the virtual host 
can't even guess about the underlying disk system it shouldn't try to 
optimise for it.
