Don't bother, just make /usr/lib (in the root partition, when /usr is
not mounted) be a symlink to /lib - then "it does it automatically".
(This might usefully be done in sysinst when setting up a system
with /usr other than on root, unfortunately, it can't be done so
easily if /usr is to be on /, but /usr/lib is not ... but I have
never seen anyone attempt a layout like that).
