I'm guessing that the point is that ext2 is a scaled-up re-implementation of minix-fs, which itself is a scaled-down re-implementaion of v7-fs. NetBSD's ffs is probably more directly based on CSRG code. In this roundabout fashion the Linux people arrived at a filesystem that is feature-wise very similar to ffs, but without being on-disk compatible.
