It probably works. That's been the case with new Areca controllers in the past. They are reasonably friendly, and would probably tell you at least informally whether there have been any changes they would expect to make it _not_ work with a driver written for their older cards. Or, look at the FreeBSD driver and see if it needed any changes to support the model in question. Odds are it didn't.
