Something like this should work I think.

public void renderPage(IMarkupWriter writer, IRequestCycle cycle) {
        IComponent comp = null;
        if (choice == foo) 
                comp = cycle.getPage().getComponent("foo");
        else if (choice == bar) 
                comp = cycle.getPage().getComponent("foo");
        
        if (comp != null)
                comp.render(writer,cycle);

}
