No, it is just one of the possible ways. Again - Tapestry (or JSP or Struts) are all database agnostic.

I coming from an ASP/.NET background where I really did not have to
think of  all these things to get a web app running.

Let's not get into that ... Anybody can get an application runing in no time using his favorite technology. When you are learning something new, there will always be a learning curve. Tapestry just happens to have a big and steep one.
