Did you check to see if you have a Application specific setting set for the Home screen for the volume? This would explain what you are seeing.

Subject: [Talks] global volume

I have the n86 and I have the current version of talks. My issue is changing the volume. For example, I change the volume to ten on the home screen so I can hear talks when I am outside. When I go home I change the volume to 5 on the home screen since I don't need it to be that loud. Now if I go in to another application such as contacts or bluetooth the volume remains at ten. I always thought if you changed the volume the volume get's changed globally. BTW, I have my volume set to five within the talks settings which might or might not have anything to do with my current issue.
