What about the phone freezing and going off, is that because it is not in PC
suite mode?

Did you make sure that the phone is in PC Suite mode? What the PC Suite is
complaining about is the phone connection and not the cable. So you need
to make sure that the phone is in PC Suite mode.

There are 3 different back-ups for the N8 that I can see using PCSuite
but these will not back-up on to the phone as what is happening is that
the phone is freezing.
