Have you tried the C5? it is a numeric keypad.

if you can plug standard earphones into this phone then it has a 3.5mm
socket.
i will use wi fi but only at home and will turn off when not in use.
it does sound like a phone that i will be able to work with and as you say
the keys are a learning curve, but i do like a challenge.
i did use the nokia touch screen phones but found i couldn't use them
quick enough and it was becomming frustrating, so this is my next port of
call.

Battery life will be very good if you are going to use without wi-fi

they will be switched off, which i presume will help battery life.
