Nuance TALKS&ZOOMS Version 5.30 Release Notification 1. Introduction We proudly announce the release of the Nuance Accessibility Suite – Nuance TALKS and ZOOMS – Version 5.30 supporting Series 60 3rd Edition / 5th Edition / Symbian^3 for February 29, 2012. Version 5.30 is a free upgrade for all Premium Edition licenses generated after November 13th, 2007 (the release date of TALKS 3.50 for 3rd Edition). In particular, this means that it can be installed by any customer who is currently able to run version 4.11 or 5 without requiring a new license. Please note that, as in previous versions, ZOOMS screen magnification is currently supported only on Series 60 3rd Edition and 5th Edition phones. 2. Changes to the list of supported phones The main focus in this version is support for Symbian^3 phones that have installed the “Belle” firmware update. The following handsets, which are shipping with Belle pre-installed, are newly supported: Nokia 700 Nokia 701 We also assume the Nokia 500 to work without major problems. However we have not got enough test results yet to definitely confirm this. See section 6 for a full list of compatible handsets for this version. 3. What’s New? This section lists the improvements of TALKS&ZOOMS 5.30 compared to the previous version (5.22). 3.1. Support for Nokia Belle upgrade The major addition to this release of TALKS is the addition for support for the Nokia Belle upgrade, which is the latest refresh of the Symbian^3 platform used on recent touch devices. “Belle” provides some performance improvements over the “Anna” update, and TALKS will generally provides the same level of access to Belle as to previous versions of Symbian^3. However, using a few areas of the phone with a screen reader will be slightly less convenient after the upgrade (e.g. the home screen and the phone’s main menu), so a certain learning curve is to be expected. Following is a list of some specific known issues that have been observed during testing: • The virtual keyboard displayed when entering a WLAN key is currently not accessible. • When moving between the To/cc/… fields the name of the current e-mail account is repeated. • Automatic labelling of home screen icons is currently not supported. • Home screen index is currently not read. • If the virtual keyboard is closed after not entering text for about 5 seconds, the application will remain silent and not even produce speech when “exploring”, as TALKS has gone into a “power saving” mode. Pressing any physical key will resolve this. Please note that upgrading to Belle is only possible using the Nokia Suite application on the PC, which may require sighted assistance because of a lack of screen reader compatibility. 3.2. Performing long taps on Symbian^3 With the addition of Belle, but also in earlier versions of Symbian^3, increasing use is made of the “long tap” gesture, which consists of holding down the finger on the screen until a menu appears (the waiting period is indicated by a vibration signal). For example, in Belle it is required for deleting widgets from the home screen, and it can also be used to bring up useful shortcuts on menu items in other places. However, this gesture conflicts with the TALKS gesture of holding down the finger for half a second to start exploring the screen. To initiate a long tap on an object in Symbian^3 with TALKS, the following method can be used, which requires some practice, but gives access to features that are otherwise unavailable: • Explore in the usual way to find the object on the display. • Lift the finger from the screen. • Put the finger back onto the screen – note that you will have to hit the object exactly, rather than tapping anywhere on the screen. • Shortly afterwards, but within half a second, bring down a second finger anywhere on the display, and keep it down. • You should now feel the phone vibrate for a moment, and then hear an announcement of the popup menu, or another confirmation that the long tap was recognized. • Now lift both fingers again, and explore to find the context menu (or, for example, the “Clear” button in the upper right corner of a widget that can be used to remove it from the Belle home screen). 3.3. Reading the contents of browser views Newer versions of Symbian make increasing use of embedded browser views in certain applications. Examples are the contents of an e-mail that has been opened or the text of a help page. The Conversations view in Symbian^3 also consists of a browser view. These views are usually read as “Browser” by TALKS. To get access to their contents, press [Talks],[Down] once and wait for the “Page has…” announcement. After that, the e-mail or help text can be accessed as if it were a web page, using [Up], [Down] and the usual quick keys. 3.4. Other changes This section lists further changes to TALKS that were made in this update: Application support: • 3rd Edition: popups with icon names in Gallery are now read. • 3rd Edition FP2: list of search results in phone application is now read. This allows quickly searching for contacts with the name “John” by entering 5646 as if it were a phone number, and then using [Up] and [Down] to go through the list of entries. • Improved compatibility with recent Nokia Maps builds for touch screens (3.08 and 3.09 beta). • Labeled some important icons in Nokia Maps, such as the map center symbol, which shows the position to which the street name shown by Maps refers, and the current position. The button "Go to my position" can be used to center the current GPS position again. • Support for WhatsApp messenger (reading of lists and conversation view). • E-Mails in the new Nokia Mail application are now read with access to all links and attachments after pressing [Talks], [Down] to make the browser view accessible. • Labeled additional icons in several applications. Touch improvements: • Made "Missed events" window explorable (Anna/Belle) • Made e-mail folder view explorable (Anna/Belle) • Anna: Focused e-mail folder in "Move message to" is read. • Popup menus appearing after a long tap are now read. Other changes: • Removed support for Wayfinder Access application, as the service is no longer active. • Call waiting bubble is recognized during phone call, and read when screen is next checked for updates (e.g. after pressing a key) Bug fixes: • 3rd Edition: fixed repeating of application icons on home screen. • Focus in e-mail inbox is now recognized even if focus is also "stuck" on one of the buttons (e.g. Sorting) • Browser: File upload buttons now open a file selector, rather than a text box (on phones that require the text box workaround for text input). • Browser: Fixed closing or out of memory error when passing over frames in different domain (seen at www.convertfiles.com on E75, Browser 7.1) • Browser: Fixed bug that caused some dynamic changes to a web page to leave parts of it inaccessible afterwards. • Object Viewer: fixed bug that caused some objects (especially unknown types) to not appear in list - this may cause a small number of object viewer roles to need redefinition, but should generally help accessibility of unknown objects. • Fixed various cases where labels of softkeys were not read together with window, only when exploring (e.g. Anna media player and “Missed events” popup). • Fixed rare cases where audio device would repeat last piece of speech (or silence) endlessly, possibly reducing battery life or interfering with other audio. 4. Known Issues with specific phones and apps This section lists some frequently reported known problems and limitations that may occur when using TALKS with particular handsets or apps: • Daisy2go on Symbian Anna: after adding a new book to the bookshelf, the application will close. However, the book is added correctly and can be used after starting the application again. • Nokia browser 7.3: opening drop-down lists by pressing [Select] currently does not work reliably, due to a bug in the browser. • Nokia E7-00: the default [Talks] key on this phone is the [Menu] key at the front of the device. On phones without Symbian Anna update, this key will not behave correctly if it is pressed twice too quickly, or if the touch screen is used within about a second after pressing [Talks]. It is recommended to upgrade to Symbian Anna, or to always wait a moment after pressing the [Talks] key on this phone. • Symbian^3 (without Symbian Anna update): double-tapping on a scroll bar may lead to a restart of the phone, especially if it is done quickly after opening a new window. • Nokia C5-03: In the List view of the main menu, no cursor is displayed when moving around with the side keys, so the focus is not spoken. As a workaround, use either Grid view, or explore the screen to select menu items. • Touch phones, mostly 5th Edition: Currently, some menus for switching to other keyboard layouts and for picking suggestions from the T9 dictionary are not fully accessible. Switching to other keyboard layouts is not recommended on 5th Edition phones, as some of them (e.g. mini-Qwerty or handwriting) are not yet supported by TALKS, and can be difficult to exit. • 5th Edition only: On some phones opening the symbol table in the on-screen keyboard can lead to the keyboard stopping to take input until you press [Exit] to go to the main menu, and then return to the application where you were entering text. • 5th Edition only: text entry into an object announced as “Fields” (e.g. a date or a time) is not supported well by this version of TALKS, as the virtual keyboard cannot be used with speech. This limits the use of the Calendar and Clock applications that rely on these types of objects for date and time input. • N97: training mode will read the digits, rather than the letters, for the keys in the top row of the QWERTY keyboard. • 3rd Edition (FP1 and FP2): the “Search” application is not supported. • 3rd Edition FP2: You will notice a slow response of voice recognition "beep" after holding [Key 2] when TALKS is not muted • E75: When using ZOOMS, moving around the screen by holding down the cursor keys is currently not possible. The magnified portion of the screen always follows the current focus position. 5. FAQ Q: Your software does not install on my E-Series handset or branded device, and reports a Certificate Error! Why? A: While TALKS&ZOOMS for Symbian itself is certified, and thus can be installed on any supported handset, the installers for the TTS engines (Eloquence or Vocalizer for Mobile) are not signed. E-Series handsets and some branded devices only accept the installation of signed software, unless you turn of the corresponding option inside the Application Manager: • Open the phone menu. • Open the App. Manager inside the Tools folder • Press “Options”, then select “Settings”. • Set “Software Installation” from “Signed only” to “All”. • Press “Back” to close the Settings dialogue, then “Exit” to close the App. Manager. • Now, you can install the TTS engine. Another reason could be that the date on your phone is not set correctly – as Symbian apps need to be digitally signed, SIS files can only be installed if the phone is set to a valid date. Q: Can I install the new release of TALKS&ZOOMS, while a previous release is active? A: Yes, if the new version is installed to the same memory location as the previous release. If you would like to change the memory location, you have to remove the previous release first! Q: Why do I get an “Upgrade error” when installing the S60 3rd/5th Edition version? A: The most likely reasons are that you have used a beta release, or already have the Nokia TTS driver available that was installed as a separate file with version 3.10. Please remove any beta version, as well as the Nokia TTS driver or the Nuance Speech2Go Reader application, before upgrading to TALKS 5.22. Q: Why do I get an “Invalid serial number” error when trying to activate a demo version of TALKS, even though I have entered the code correctly and never used TALKS on this phone before? A: The most likely reason is that TALKS thinks the demo has already “expired” because the date on the phone is set incorrectly, usually to some date in the future. Q: Why do the side keys on my touch screen phone no longer move the cursor after upgrading to the latest version of TALKS? A: Some keyboard functions, such as [Talks],[digit] shortcuts on the Idle screen and the use of the side keys to navigate through menus on 5th Edition, are only supported after the phone has been rebooted once after installing or re-enabling TALKS. 6.
