No you couldnt Denise, one had to purchase a T9 Nav from Nuance to do that at 
the home screen.

I'm not talking about typing the first few letters while in the 
contact list. I'm talking about typing the first few letters while 
still on the home screen without going into contacts. Maybe we could 
do that on other nokia phones but I didn't know about it until now.
