Jen, I use an E71 as well and usually just surf to the mobile facebook URL when out and about: M.facebook.com
At that point you can comment on statuses, post updates of your own, send messages, effectively do anything you might expect. There is one exception, of course, and that's tag people in your updates. :) That's not unique to the phone, but rather to the mobile site. Facebook chat is disabled on that url as well.
