hi, below is my personal experience. i dont think this consider defect on the phone memory, on my experience with symbian nokia phones since 2004, this can happen even if the phone is brand new. the reason behind this is, when nokia load in the firmware for the phone, it will leave some temp files in the phone memory. so these temp files will cost the phone memory lesser.

It works like there is invisible trash in the memory and nokia should be able to clean it without formatting all the memory and loosing everything we have in there. They should have kind of a phone memory cleaner that scans defective data and keep useful things we have in there. I've had this trash in the phone memory for the last two years without knowing it.
