https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Key:crossing:island has been approved with 24 votes in favour and 2 votes against (required 74% majority: 20 votes). I'm going to create and update the documentation by the end of this week and will address the questions and concearns raised during voting soon in a separate post.
