As I said, everything has a history.
Wayside cross and shrine, monuments, memorials, castles etc. It just seems to signify a special relationship with history, not much more than that.
Shrines/Memorials are a bit of a strange one. Their current use is the same as originally planned. What's 'historic' is the event they're memorializing.
