I seem to recall that 'tyre' was adopted as British engineering usage to avoid confusion with other senses of the word, 'tire,' similar to the way that one of the engineering societies decreed that henceforth 'fuze' was to be used for the explosive initiator, while 'fuse' was to be used for the electrical safety device.
