Restaurant: sit down at tables in/near the premises and food is cooked to
order
Fast food: just a take-away service - and food is generally already cooked
and kept warm ready to serve/eat.

McDonalds are restaurants ! even they say this !

Fast food restaurants, if you ask me ;)
