Tagging the relation containing the parts of the route is not the issue.

I am referring to the "ways" that represent the actual track a canoe would take to traverse a lake. It is a type of path but it is on water, sort of like a ferry route. For example, the most direct route across a lake might not be the best. You might want to go around an island's leeward side rather than to windward. Drawing a line or way across the lake and around the island to show this path is easy. But how then do you tag it? It's not a highway and it's not a ferry track. What exactly is it?

If you used the same kind of scheme ferries use, then renders will already have some idea of what to do with it..

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:ferry

thus;
canoe=trunk
canoe=unclassified
etc.

but it will need a wiki page .. and RFC RFV here if you like too.

For me .. what is windward today would be leeward tomorrow.

    Thanks for bringing this up. Canoe routes and their connectors is
    a topic that needs work.

    In the present case and to answer your question, I would prefer
    portage=*

    This would leave open multiple possibilities for values, yes/no,
    canoe. kayak, etc., that might more fully describe the
    portage.The other two are too limited or specialized, IMO.

    Yep, the broader the key the better .. you never know what things
    will crop up in the future.

    Another issue regarding canoe routes which needs to be addressed
    at some point in the future is that there is, to my knowledge, no
    way to tag the waterway portions of a canoe trail or route.

    I'd think that canoe routes should be done similar to bicycle
    routes... maybe mountain bike as they have some system for the
    difficulty of the route..

    There should be an OSM wiki page on it.

        Hi, I'd like to add some tags for canoe portages
        (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portage) in wilderness areas.
        These would be trails tagged highway=path plus some tag to
        designate that they're used for portaging between lakes. I
        have found three different tags that are currently used to
        tag portages (there may be others?), and am wondering if
        anyone has recommendations about what would be best.

        1) portage=* (223 objects)
        http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/portage
        2) whitewater=portage_way (227 objects)
        http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/whitewater=portage_way
        3) canoe=portage  (67 object)
        http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/canoe=portage

        Cheers,
        Brad
