I disagree, an important requirement of tagging schemes and mapping best-practices (it's not just about tags here, but what you apply them to) is that they are easy to maintain. The map *will* get updated, and you have no control over the skill level of the person who comes after you. So you'd better make updating the map easy for that person. That means in this case "don't be lazy, split the way so that only the required portion is tagged with maxheight".
