I don't think it's a good idea to adapt your tagging practices to suit systems that can't be bothered to handle ways/relations! Please, if you think a feature is geographically better represented as a way, do it as a way. I prefer to map the physical extent of a shop when possible, since shops very often occupy a non-trivial physical area (especially large ones, e.g. supermarkets). So to answer the original question: no those wiki edits would seem to be misguided, and for more reasons than just one-feature-one-element.
