For clarity, those conventions are 3 years old, even before I joined OSM: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=WikiProject_Belgium/Conventions/Walking_Routes&diff=prev&oldid=277433 I don't say that it shouldn't be re-thought, but I don't see a need to change our tagging schema. It was just an example of how we do it.
