The how is fairly simple, no one seems to have disagreed with that,
the why and the what on the other hand are less decisive :)

We don't have to change everything at once, and by doing some of these
things we are likely to improve tools to be more resilient, short term
pain, long term gain...

We could just use your various=* suggestion for things that don't fit :)

Although the bigger issue here is people are doing a lot of hand
waving and predicting there will be problems, a solution would be to
come up with a suitable dataset and try and classify everything and
see if there will be problems categorising everything, rather than
assuming there will. However I fear that no matter how much time and
effort is put into this people will still find some excuse to say it's
a bad idea.

Maybe we should stop using words for key pair values and just come up
with a database that issues ID numbers, half the problems with the
current scheme is due to people treating enumerated key pairs in the
same way they are used to using english, the other half is english
isn't used consistently.
