There is nothing wrong with your multipolygons as evidenced by the fact that
the gardens and buildings render as expected in Mapnik.  I've been trying
out this style of mapping as well and have discovered that Osmarender has
some bugs in how it deals with multipolygons.  See this ticket:
http://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/2685 .   The only way I've been able to
get multipolygons to render in osmarender is to remove all tags from the
member ways.  This is unfortunate as it often makes a lot of sense to tag
the edge of an area as a fence, wall, cliff, coastline, stream, or other
linear feature.  Currently the only way to make this sort of situation show
in osmarender is with two ways directly on top of each other.  Personally
I'd just ignore osmarender.  Hopefully someone will fix the bug.
