You have good skills , it will be bit easy for you to learn about sympy. For contributing to open source you have to learn about that perticular repository even if it is good first issue. Use tag good first issue (try oldest one) , then the issue will have two or more tags , go to those tags and learn from solved issue or in pull requests section , ask mentors below that solved issue or the issue you want to solve. How you will start working? I will recommend to use jupyter notebook for solving a issue. Remember solving first issue may take upto 2-3weeks. Reach me when you need help
