Let me know if you push a test version to the Apple App Store and I’ll be happy to test it for you.

I've been building a Kotlin Multiplatform frontend for Sword (iOS and Android) and just pushed an early test version to the Android Play Store today. If you'd like to take a look, send me your Gmail address and I'll add you to the testing list. I'm holding off on the App Store for now to delay that $100 annual fee a bit longer.

Ok, thanks. Like I said, I’m no expert. I just took a Quick Look at the code and guessed.

Actually, PocketSword is mostly written in Objective C.

I’m by far not an expert, but it looks like it’s written in python. If/as I have time, I may give a shot at working through the code and seeing what may need to be done to update it.

Lord, I echo Troy’s prayer in thanking you for Nic, and I pray for his family and the others who have been lost and their families, that you embrace the families and give them peace as their loved ones have entered your presence.

In Him,

Chad

I've imported Nic's bitbucket repo to CrossWire at added his family's obituary here:

https://git.crosswire.org/main/pocketsword

I've updated the applications/handhelds list to note the passing of Nic, the unsupported status of the application and added a link to the source, in case anyone would like to pick up the project.

I am happy to make Bishop look and feel more like Pocketsword-- it seems people enjoyed the application.

Lord Jesus, thank You for Nic and the time You blessed us with sharing in service together with him.  Thank You for the others we've lost recently, including Chris Little.  May we all look forward with excited to the day we see You face to Face.

I have given up hope of resurrecting PocketSword. Nic Carter did some wonderful things, and blessed us all with some fine Bible study software for a while. I trust he is doing well with our Father in Heaven.

I have made 3 attempts at resurrecting PocketSword. The first two were foiled not just by the learning curve of taking over someone else's code, but by some serious blocks in the Apple App Store. Because of iCloud entitlements of the app, we could not update the software without Nic's action, which he didn't have the time & energy to take. While we could fork & rename the project theoretically, the third attempt with a new volunteer will be a restart using fresh, modern multi-platform tools. We are still in the brain storming, design, and study stage. Lots of ideas are on the table. The first question is whether or not we really need a new and/or improved FLOSS Bible study app. I think that the answer is "Yes".

In the mean time, it pains me to say it, but please remove PocketSword from the Crosswire software page. For now, I heartily recommend Bishop. And I hope to have something more cheerful to announce later.

I am very saddened to hear that. May God bless his family. The Sword Project has been a blessing to me for a couple of decades now, and I am truly thankful for all who work on it.

Sad to report that PocketSword developer Nic Carter died on 25 October 2025.

Maybe Michael Johnson can find someone to revive the project?

I’d love to see PocketSword come back. It was a great tool, and there are few others out there (if any) that measure up to it.

PocketSword has fallen off the iOS/iPadOS support wagon due to being too old of a build.
But PS is still listed on the applications page as the first element for handhelds. It should be removed.
