Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm familiar with the paste command, having used it myself for various tasks.
It turns out the specific task he had in mind was both simpler than text editing, yet more complex than merely comparing two files line by line. One file has a legacy font, the other has the same contents converted to Unicode. He may even have had to reconstruct the legacy font himself during earlier work, and design the Unicode conversion map table.
