I've not tested this except under Linux, and that only very briefly, but doesn't adding a similar call to AC_CHECK_LIB outside the case...esac solve this, by making sure the check is always made (and so can always be tested for) on any host platform? I'm probably missing some corner case where this doesn't do what we need, but maybe it is a start? :)
