Ok, the offending items in css for IE6 were threefold: ">" for direct child does not work :first-child does not work
and the div borders are something weird which i have not figured yet. So I have introduced browser sniffing on the server and serve a mildly divergent CSS for IE (all of them) It works on IE6 and IE7, but the boxes on the right have no border. I can live with that. If someone has an idea what do to about Chrome I am all ears.
