Though the New King James Version is not one for which Crosswire has a copyright licensing agreement, I though it might be worthwhile sharing an observation about the use of oblique type and italic type in the NKJV. Who knows, but that this might turn out to be significant in another context or existing Bible version?
Examine NKJV Matthew 1 in BibleGateway, and read the footnotes. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%201&version=50 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%201&version=50 a. Words in italic type have been added for clarity. They are not found in the original Greek. d. Words in oblique type in the New Testament are quoted from the Old Testament. Emphasis mine. There are similar footnotes elsewhere like the first, but to cover Hebrew and Aramaic in the OT. Trouble is that most browsers do not distinguish properly between oblique type and italic type. Nor does Rick Meyer's e-Sword application. There again, there are some OT quotations in the NKJV NT that also contain words added for clarity, which creates further ambiguities. Suppose we were faced with a SWORD module which contained the same ambiguity? Does the OSIS markup cope with it? And if so, does OSIS2MOD deal with it correctly?
