Ben, Consider trying out to make it rtoL a priority, please. Tiny portable applications in RtoL scripts have a role way beyond the curiosity value.
Wrt widgets - you might get a pleasant surprise - When Karl and I looked at Gnomesword he thought (+ was worried )of the long work DM had to put in to BD to make it work. Then it turned out that the GTK libraries did most of the job out of the box.
