I can only offer a user's point of view.

Very slow to load, very bloated.   Open office Calc takes up to 184 seconds to open an excel sheet that requires 1 second on Excel 2003, on a 3ghz hyperthreading pentium.  The office writer application takes 37,660KB (37 megabytes) to load up in. ( http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=119 )

Google is planning to do some hiring for engineers to work on open office. http://news.com.com/Google+throws+bodies+at+OpenOffice/2100-7344_3-5920762.html?tag=st.ref.goo

Sun is working with Google on other things also, in the Java area. http://news.com.com/Sun+and+Google+shake+hands/2100-1014_3-5888701.html?tag=nl

I think that the landscape may change before such a project would be completed, but I'm not sure.

2.0 is very compliant with Microsoft Office for those that have heavy duty machines.

Does anyone have significant experience with OpenOffice? The 2.0 release recently was released and claims to be VERY compliant with XML standards.

I have not followed the progress of OO 2.0 particularly closely, and have no experience with ver 1.x. My impression is that OO 2.0 might be applicable to OSIS (but I am a newbie wrt osis). My direct interest is that OO 2.0 might be applicable in preparing something like a SharingBible that simplified XSLT issues..

Input appreciated. Hope all is well.
