Actually, the colors are NOT mapped by the satellite, but can be set using elevation in the software. The satellite data is only elevation datasets that are rendered by the software. Actual images then have to be overlayed Also, fo more modern maps the software has the ability to overlay lansat images.

One question though- define what good colors are ;-) I was shown maps of the region in the Logos software by a friend that has the full version. The test maps I've done already have better colors than the logos maps :-)

As I said these are preliminary tests from a program called 3DEM, this program works well with another program called Terragen which will create photorealistic renderings. I haven't started work with transporting the terrains to Terragen yet. Since Terragen will not directly import the satellite data, this is a 2 step process.

One thing to keep in mind though, the satellite data for areas ouside the US is only aailable in 1km data format. For more detailed terrain I'd need an acurate topographical map that I could assign grayscale values to the alltitude bands (called an elevation map in the 3D world) and then import to the 3D terrain generation module.

Hi,
Here's the second sample.

Again, these are PRELIMINARY tests. I still need to learn a lot more
about the software, which will greatly improve the quality of the maps.
I thought I'd send these images to show the kind of maps that can be
generated.

Opinions?

We more need a good looking palette than exact colors which the satellite
camera registered. Consider changing the colors.
