I think this is a great idea! It was my hearts desire to start a PalmOS port of Sword a while back. But after some looking into the possibility I found Poetry's bible reader (actually I think Chris told me about it.) We decided to link to Poetry's web site. About six months ago Poetry told me about his desire to go commercial, and I asked him if he minded me taking over the project. He was very open to it, but I unfortunately didn't have the time to pick it up. One thing I needed was the compiler he was using (called falchnet or something), actually it isn't required, I have actually compiled the project without it, but it would have made things a bit easier. My point is... I too would be glad to see someone take the reigns on this project. I would love to help but I doubt I will get the time. I think you will find poetry's coding style very consistent which should be of some help.
