Be aware of the port-channeling protocol you use ( LACP or PAGP )
Channel-group 1 mode active -> LACP

There are timers involved to get the port-channel up.

If you are sure about which interfaces will be part of it and you don't need to 
define spare ports
Then you could also go for a static port-channel:
switchport nonegociate


Also be careful to apply your vlans on the port-channel interface only. It gets 
replicated to the physical interfaces.
