I am not a lawyer however I do not believe your statement has been true since the Berne Convention. Nothing is required to assert copyright. A c in a circle, p in a circle, "(c)", and "copyright" are *all* optional. That said (c) is widely recognized is a copyright symbol (imho) and may serve to increase damages from "willful infringement".
