I looked into this more. I started wondering if "xdev" has been obsolete after /usr/obj/<target>.<target_arch> dir chaneg.
Both of these commands worked okay: % make kernel-toolchain kernel TARGET_ARCH=mips KERNCONF=PB92 -C /usr/src % make buildworld TARGET_ARCH=arm -C /usr/src While I kept getting compile errors by: % make xdev-build TARGET_ARCH=mips TARGET=mips -C /usr/src In other words, if I don't run explict xdev command, buildworld and buildkernel compile okay.
