Dear Jacqueline,

Let me be one of the first to support this effort, as we can all agree that
terminology in this domain is fluid, and often confusing.

However, regarding your initial description, let me be one of the first on this
list to comment, as a research in this field for over 20 years. There is a
conflation in your description between immersion and interaction. Spatial
audio, by its nature should necessarily be "immersive" but this does not equate
to, nor require, "interaction". In that sense, you are better describing a
virtual acoustic environment, rather than "simple" spatial audio. In the same
way, there are degrees of interaction, from free rotation in a pre-rendered
environment to user controlled scene elements. However, while the addition of
"interaction" can clearly benefit the perceived quality of spatial audio, there
is nothing inherent or specific in spatial audio that necessitates interaction.

I will contact the site more directly with regards to potential contributions.

Cordially,
-Brian FG Katz

Coming to Terms with Spatial Audio.

Spatial Audio is defined loosely in the industry; while the creative community
at large understands spatial audio as audio that is interactive via
headtracking or movement, the marketing industry is using this term to broadly
describe audio that is not interactive and just includes additional processing
to claim the audio is interactive when it in fact is not (cases of headlocked
HRTF processing/room modeling). As market intelligence increases and more
hardware enabled devices become available the specifics of what ?flavor? of
spatial audio is being used on a case by case will unlock more creativity. in
order to encourage a properly aggregated landscape for developers, researchers
and audio professionals for any upcoming platform (whether its a collection
into one platform or many) we need terms and definitions.

We started a community led Spatial Audio Glossary:
