Hi,

As mentioned by others, the problem is not so much with signal distribution as with power distribution. Early microwave ovens used frequencies similar to those used for radio mics. Transmitting power using this technology is feasible, but lethal.

Line level signal cable and loudspeaker cable is safe, reliable and re-usable if increasingly expensive. Even AC mains cable is considered unsafe.

Locally provided solar and wind power, even if feasible, is unreliable and expensive. It also depends on batteries for storage, with inefficiency in power conversion.

It is unrealistic to expect unlimited, interference-free, wireless data transmission. Hence the recurring arguments between users of radio microphones and the telecoms industry, not to mention wireless keys, burglar alarms and home entertainment systems.

It is also unrealistic to expect unlimited internet transmission. It has been estimated that internet transmission consumes 8-16% of the UK's power production, and even been suggested that it could consume the entire power supply by 2035. E.g.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/britain-may-be-forced-to- ration-the-internet-expert-warns-as-web-use-could-consume-100-of- nations-10222638.html

Any increase in internet capacity gets used up instantly. Do we really need HD video on mobile phones ??

Technology may supply some partial answers, but we cannot expect it to satisfy all our desires indefinitely.

Ciao,

Dave

Subject: [Sursound] Wireless speakers

I may have posted it before but maybe things have changed. I do a lot of multichannel site specific work sometimes I use speakers up to a hundred metres away from the control center. I currently use Mackie SRM450s and miles and miles of xlr cable which is inconvenient to say the least (think cherry pickers and risk assessments that resemble Phd theses etc etc) . Is
there currently any wireless pa or even smaller speakers that can work
wireless (I would love to go wireless on both small and large
isntallations) . I know I can use seinheizer headphone units but I was
wondering if there was a speaker with build in wireless that is relatively compression free (ie not bluetooth!) plus 32 Seinheizer units plus speakers is too costly at the moment. All the wirless speakers Ive seen (eg Alto) only allow stereo - there does not seem to be a system that can deal with multiple discrete channels. Jorn did you mention such a system ? Anyone
else care to chime in ?
I look forward to the day when I hear the question "Grandad - what's an
audio cable ?"
