Ok Now that I look at the not-so-good-resolution photo on Martin's page, I can see that it is 6 pins.
6-pin XLR:s have been used for "dual channel intercom systems and stage lighting control applications" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XLR_connector#Six_pin I must get new reading glasses. Doh!
